About Friday the 13th

Happy Friday the 13th! You may not know it, but this day is a very 20th Century invention. Although fear of the number 13 has a long history, called triskaidekaphobia, relating it to Friday seems to be linked more to American culture than anything else. Some believe the fear or negativity surrounding Friday the 13th comes from a 1907 novel called Friday, the Thirteenth, about Wall Street broker who creates a panic in the financial markets on a – surprise – Friday the 13th. However it came into popular culture, no one can argue about its impact. The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute (yeah, it’s a thing) estimates that up to 21 million Americans have a fear of Friday the 13th. This day has an economic impact too with approximately $800 million in lost business. This is the second (we had one back in January) and last Friday the 13th of 2017. So, rub that lucky rabbit’s foot or do what you can to smile and make it to Saturday…just don’t walk under any ladders.

Next week Chamber members have the opportunity to hear from an elected official – Senator Tony Mendoza. Many of you know the Senator from his time in the Assembly or on the Artesia City Council. He will report on what’s going on in Sacramento and how it could impact your business. If you have a question about the decision making in our State’s Capitol, this is a great opportunity to come and ask an official who represents you. We hope you will join us next Tuesday morning – see below for more information or to RSVP.

Don’t forget everyone’s favorite event – the Turkey Bowl & Networking Mixer is just around the corner on Thursday, November 16th at AMF Cerritos Lanes. Watch for more information about this event soon.

Have a great weekend!
