Flex that electoral muscle!

Welcome to March 2017, also known as Politics Month. Over the next five weeks or so, Cerritos residents will be learning much more about the seven candidates running for the two open City Council seats. Of course, this will be after the County election next week. Not sure why? Well, the City Council had voted to move the local election day when they were considering placing a sales tax on the ballot. However, that issue failed, but the new election date was already set. So, Cerritos residents now get to flex their “electoral muscles” twice over the next several months.

Why do I bring this up? Well, as I’ve said in the past, local elections have a great deal of impact on your day-to-day life – from who hauls your trash away to what types of businesses enter the community to how much local sales tax or fees you pay. There’s been great leadership here in Cerritos over the life of the City – both elected officials and staff. This city enjoys a great shopping, parks, and entertainment. This does not happen by chance, it takes planning and vision. Let’s hope the two new council members elected in April subscribe to a vision that will take this fine city into a successful future. There will be three candidate’s forums, including one by the Chamber on March 14th, where voters can hear directly from the seven candidates running.

One last thing, my family has seen some medical challenges over the past few weeks. I have to give a big thank you to all of those who provide health care services. From doctors to nurses to office staff, what you do and the service you provide makes a great deal of difference in the lives of patients and their families. In all the debate going on in government about how to pay you, I hope we don’t forget how you strengthen our communities.

Peace,

Scott
