 At least buy flowers…

I learned a long time ago how important Valentine’s Day can be when I skipped it one year. Let’s say it didn’t go well. It’s probably not surprising that 53% of women say they would end their relationship if they didn’t receive something on Valentine’s Day. I would say that guys are pretty darn good about celebrating this day. They – we! – purchase 73% of the flowers bought for Valentine’s Day (we have some great florists in the Chamber who do great work – check them out!), although women do buy 85% of all greeting cards…so, guys, we have some work to do. It might surprise you that average consumer spends about $140 during this holiday, adding up to over $18 billion spent. Still, guys end up spending, on average, over $190 on their significant other, mostly on jewelry.

My wife has put me in a difficult situation this year. She said she doesn’t want me to spend money on flowers or gifts. My response: yeah, right! Actually, before you begin shaking your head, I have already done a bit of shopping and the kids and I plan to do something nice for her. I know, many of you are saying to yourselves, “wow, just being married to Scott is enough of a gift.” Of course, you’re right! You know I’m kidding. I am very lucky and, even though she’s giving me a pass this year, I’ll make sure she knows that on Valentine’s Day, and really every day, that she is loved and that I’m a lucky man. Here’s a friendly remember: let’s shop local and at a Chamber member this Valentine’s Day!

Enjoy your weekend and I hope to see you at next week’s Sheriff’s Crime Update luncheon on the 16th at the Sheraton.

Peace,

Scott
