Most in this area know Don and Julie Knabe. After all, they have lived in Cerritos since 1971 and Don has been a fixture in local and L.A. County leadership since about that time. This week I had the chance to sit down with Julie to go over some historical photos to help identify people and places from the hundreds of photos the Chamber has collected. If you didn’t know, Julie is a bit of an amateur local historian. Her recollection is amazing, as she went back many years to identify folks and locales from years past. But to me, it was all about listening to Julie as she shared stories and memories. Many of you know I’m not all that quiet, but I sat for hours enthralled with each story about the community and the Chamber (Julie has been Chamber Board President twice!). We laughed as she shared her stories and it was an afternoon I won’t soon forget. Thank you, Julie, for all you’ve done for this community, you really are a treasure.
Do you know we are only about a month away from the 2016 Taste of the Region & Business Expo? Our list of participating restaurants is growing – you don’t want to miss out on the great food that will be there this year! If you are a local business, this is a great way to promote your brand to the attendees – and there’s still time to secure a sponsorship or booth. Visit www.CerritosTaste.com for the 4-1-1 on this year’s event!
One last personal note – 15 years ago today a baby was born four months early. He didn’t even weigh a pound and the odds of his surviving the day, let alone to today, were very slim. Be he had the “will” to live and next week he will be starting high school. His mother named him Will for the determination he had to live. Yup, this is my “lil” Will (who stands about 6 feet tall), my son (okay, step-son) who I’ve helped raise since he was two. He still has that determination and I couldn’t be more proud of him. Happy bday bud.
Have a nice weekend – for many, it will be the last weekend before school starts. Many thanks to all of the teachers out there who are busy preparing for the coming school year and for all you do to educate our kids.
