Luck o’ the Irish, or Not

Luck o’ the Irish, or Not

I’m not Irish, and I certainly don’t have much luck…especially during this time of year. That’s right – it’s time for March Madness! The time of year when many of us tune in to see a college we haven’t heard of beat a school we know well. In fact, the first round of games is going on even as I write this column. So far Florida, West Virginia, and Middle Tennessee have won their games. For those of you (us!) who’ve filled out a bracket (purely for fun, right?), I bet you picked some of these smaller, lesser known teams to beat bigger schools. Here’s something you can “bet” on – an estimated $1.9 billion in lost productivity (why are you looking at me?), $9 billion wagered (with about $7 billion of that done “illegally”), and well over $1 billon in TV advertising revenue. This doesn’t even figure in the local economic impact to the cities hosting games during the tournament. Oh, and if you have filled out a bracket, here’s a stat for you – you are two times as likely to win back-to-back Mega Millions lotteries than to fill out a perfect bracket.

This was a great week for the Chamber. We learned a great deal at the Cerritos City Council Candidates’ Forum we held on Tuesday. The Chamber is proud to provide this service to the voters of Cerritos. Make an informed choice on April 11th – weigh what’s best for you, your family, and your community. Democracy is not a spectator sport, be involved and informed. On Wednesday, I served as Principal for the Day at Cerritos Elementary School. Cerrito’s “real” principal, Kevin Amburgey, spent a great deal of time with me, giving me an overview of the campus, students, and faculty. Cerritos Elementary is a special place and Kevin…Mr. Amburgey…should be very proud of his students and staff. Thank you to the ABCUSD for holding this great event each year.

Are you ready to mix it up? Good! Next week, on the 23rd, we’ll be holding a 4 to 6’er Networking Mixer at Romano’s Macaroni Grill in the Cerritos Towne Center. The following week we’ll hear from ABCUSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu at the State of the District Luncheon on the 29th. Stay tuned with the Chamber by checking out the calendar below.

Have a fun St. Patrick’s Day!

Peace,

Scott
