Spring Forward = Lose Sleep

 Spring Forward = Lose Sleep

For many Southern Californians, this weekend brings some joy. We may lose an hour of sleep, but we’ll be getting more sun. That’s right, Daylight Savings Time is upon us. I’ve always thought of this day as the unofficial beginning of the SoCal summer. The weather typically changes around this time of year and the later sunlight encourages us to enjoy the late afternoons and evenings. Today, we all seem to just go with the “Spring Forward” and “Fall Back” of Daylight Savings Time, but it was a rather controversial subject when it was voted into law in 1918 only to see it fall to repeal less than a year later. Although the time change was brought back during World War II, it wasn’t a national program until the Uniform Time Act of 1966. Today, it positively impacts the economy, albeit by sleepy shoppers during the first few weeks after second Sunday in March.

Another thing happens this time of year too: The California Legislature begins cranking out new laws. Already there’s a slew of proposed legislation that could impact wages (again) and add costs to our State’s small business. I understand that many of these laws target larger corporations, who legislators think can afford higher cost burdens (we all end up paying for them), but they impact small businesses more so. Maybe a large fast food chain can make an investment in an automated ordering system to cut down on expenses, but the local restaurant on the corner can’t do that. Watch for more information about bills the Chamber is supporting or opposing and how you can help. We’re all in this together.

We are now about a month away from the Cerritos Municipal Election (April 11th). One of the three scheduled candidates’ forums has already taken place, with the Chamber’s coming next Tuesday the 14th at 7:00 pm. This is a great way for voters and business folks to get to know what the seven council candidates plan to do to keep this city great! Hope to see you there!

Peace,

Scott
