Tis the Season
Tis the Season
Here we are, at the starting gates of the holiday season. I bet some of you are finished with your holiday shopping. I’ve started, but have a long way to go. For me, this is a great time of year – not because of presents, but because it’s great to reconnect with family and friends. I enjoy it all – from attending great local holiday events, like tree lightings and holiday open houses (like Senator Mendoza’s even this past Wednesday evening) to our holiday themed Chamber events (luncheon on 12/8 and mixer on 12/13, both at the Sheraton). It’s just plain fun and most folks are in a great mood. With all the holiday cheer going on, it’s hard not to be in a good mood.
We’ve now been through Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday. Some estimates show that this is going to be a banner year for retailers. Online shopping continues to grow and is outpacing previous years’ numbers. One article I read noted that over 70% of all online shopping has been done on Amazon, which is simply amazing to me. I suppose it’s easier to click a mouse than find parking and fight crowds, but there’s something about the holiday hustle and bustle I enjoy. I guess I relate to that line in “Silver Bells” where shoppers are rushing home with their treasures. I like how Mr. Crosby used the word “treasures” in this line – each gift selected has a specific meaning and significance to the “giver” who spent time selecting that perfect item for their loved one. So, maybe take some time to step away from the computer and visit your local mall or favorite retailer – just remember to keep that holiday spirit alive with a smile.
We are only a week away from the “Oh What Fun” Holiday Luncheon! This year’s event will be a hoot and a great way for you – and maybe your business colleagues or friends – to ring in the holiday season. This event has grown in significance in recent years as we pass along all the items collected through our Holiday Drive to one of our community partners. This year, we are helping out the low-income students and families served by BEE Smart Scholars. If you haven’t yet made a donation at one of our collection sites, please plan on bringing an item with you to the luncheon (we’re giving a free raffle ticket to all who’ve donated!). I hope to see you all there – for FUN! Don’t forget to RSVP.
